12/29/11- Music Marketing Article

We were recently invited by Imprinsic, a South Jersey based marketing company, to write a guest blog post on their marketing blog. It's founder, Mathew Steffen, happens to be a drummer and he wanted to give us a chance to impart our wisdom on the masses! The article is now available for viewing on their blog at: http://imprinsic.com/impressions-blog/, so head on over and give it a read. Make sure you let us know what you think by leaving a few comments! While you're over there, be sure to check out the rest of their website as well. From our correspondences, Mathew seems like a really personable and down to earth guy, so if you're ever in need of a little direction in the marketing department keep them in mind!

Picture
Christmas Party at the ICAC
Merry Christmas everyone! I'm watching It's a Wonderful Life as I write this, so I hope there's not too many typos! Our Christmas party was a big success. There was food, drink, great merriment, and great music. Big thanks to Styrofoam Playground and Siren for joining us! Check out our Facebook page for photos!

In other news, we are now accepting online orders for the CD version of our debut album. We're also proud to announce we'll be joining Philabundance in the fight against hunger in the Delaware Valley! Fifty percent of the profits from the online sales of this compact disc will be donated to Philabundance. CDs comes shrink wrapped and hand packaged! Don't miss this chance to hear some fine music and support a great cause! Each purchase also includes immediate download of our 11-track album in your choice of MP3 320, FLAC, or just about any other format you could possibly desire. Click here to order!

If you've been to our last couple of shows you'll know that we've added a few new songs to our set-list. We've been getting a lot of great feedback on our new stuff, so we've decided to take some time to finish writing a bunch of songs that have been in the works for a while. We'll still play the odd show from time to time, but mostly we'll be concentrating on writing and recording for a while. Make sure you stop by often though because we should have some samples of our new stuff up before too long. Until then, happy holidays and have a holly jolly Christmas!

Picture
We are happy to officially announce the addition of Alex Gresko on bass guitar! Hailing from Pitman, New Jersey, Alex is a talented and creative musician who has already begun contributing to our evolving sound. Be sure to say hello to him at our next show! We should warn you however that he loves to tickle people when first meeting them, so if you don't like to be tickled keep your distance. Seriously.

Speaking of shows, don't forget to check our show calendar as we have a few new dates up. In particular, we will be opening for EMPIRES on October 7th. It's a FREE show at TCNJ (Ewing, NJ), so be sure to come out if you're in the area. We had a blast playing at the Millcreek Tavern with The Day Life and Designer on September 14th. Thanks again to everyone who came out to see us. Stay tuned for more show dates plus a few new album reviews which should be coming soon.

5/28/11- I Wish I was Special...

Some of you may recognize this version of Radiohead's Creep from a few of The Social Network trailers.  It's a haunting adaptation by the Scala & Kolacny Brothers' Choir.  Animator Alex Heller took it a step further...

4/25/11- Red Wolf Forest

Well, as you may have noticed by now, we've changed our name from Near to Red Wolf Forest. We know that some of you were quite fond of "Near"; but unfortunately, because it's such a common word, we were running into so many problems that we were forced to make a change.  We know there have been a lot of changes recently, but we want you to know that these decisions are not made on a whim and we hope you'll trust our judgement.  This post will hopefully help you understand some of the reasoning that went behind the name change.

The main problem with Near was the fact that it was virtually impossible to find us on the internet through search engines.  This was brought to our attention time and time again as venues, publishers, friends, and even family constantly had to ask us for our exact URL so they could find our website!  Even attempting to purchase our music through iTunes or to find one of our videos on Youtube became problematic because a search for "Near" results in a host of unrelated things that happen to use the word "near" in it.

The second reason is a bit more esoteric in nature, so please bear with us :) The music industry has entered the digital age and as the major labels continue to lose control over what music becomes "popular," it has become more important than ever to be able to stand out on your own.  The internet, advancements in digital recording technology, and the proliferation of online music communities (like Myspace used to be) have all but eradicated the gatekeepers of the old music industry and have gone a long way towards leveling the playing field.  This is a double-edged sword.  On the one hand, thanks to technology, the average musician can record and release music independent of any label support.  On the other hand, thanks to technology, the average (or below average for that matter) musician can record and release music independent of any label support!  The problem isn't getting your music out there, it's getting found amongst the endless sea of other musicians who all want the same thing.

This brings us to Red Wolf Forest.  This name is unique enough to solve our first problem, and personal enough to at least address the second.  We feel the best way to stand out from the crowd is to be yourself and not apologize for it.  Our band is comprised of Sci-fi/Fantasy enthusiasts, RPG lovers, and gamers.  While some musicians may have been up all night partying, we've been up all night playing Rift or watching anime.  While you may be left to wonder what the bulge in other musicians' pants is, rest assured that if it's one of us, it's likely a deck of Magic the Gathering cards.  In short, Red Wolf Forest just sounds like a place that we would all want to go to.

Here's to hoping you'll come with us ;)
